Dr. Charla Burns, MD Appointed to the Advisory Council of Cummings Graduate Institute for Behavioral Health Studies

The nonprofit, private, post-secondary institution specializing in integrated behavioral health education welcomes Dr. Charla Burns to the CGI Advisory Council.

Cummings Graduate Institute for Behavioral Health Studies (CGI) is excited to announce that Dr. Charla Burns, MD, has been appointed to the Advisory Council for the university. The Advisory Council is a collection of full-time practitioners in the healthcare field who advise and support educational programming and offerings at CGI. Members of the Advisory Council represent broad points of view relative to integrated healthcare, including clinical, operational, and financial integration and healthcare entrepreneurship expertise.

Dr. Charla Burns is a physician and epidemiologist currently serving as the Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) Team Lead at the Texas Department of State Health Services. Prior to her current role, Dr. Burns was a COVID-19 Epidemiologist at the CDC Foundation. Dr. Burns completed her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry/Pre-Medicine at Louisiana State University and A&M College, and she earned her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Medicine. Her residency training was in the field of internal medicine. Dr. Burns has extensive experience leading teams and public health initiatives in epidemiology, statistical data review, and literature analysis. With a background in infectious disease surveillance, medical research, clinical healthcare, good clinical practice (GCP) guidelines, technical writing, and tutoring, Dr. Burns brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to CGI’s Advisory Council.

Dr. U. Grant Baldwin, Jr., DBH, the Assistant Director of Academic Programs at Cummings Graduate Institute for Behavioral Health Studies, shares, “I am absolutely elated about Dr. Burns’ appointment. Her experience, skills, and leadership will further strengthen the insight of our advisory council and leadership. Dr. Burns will certainly broaden our medical education scope and support our health equity efforts at CGI as we continue to cultivate leading voices in healthcare transformation and innovation.”

The Advisory Council is integral in improving and shaping existing curricula, identifying gaps in education and training, developing and promoting workforce development and continuing education, and identifying and advocating for essential industry and educational partnerships for CGI.
