Despite $2 Million in Funding, Preventable Deaths Persist—Dr. Cara English Urges Immediate Collaborative Action
Feb. 24, 2025
Dr. Cara English, DBH, MA, LAC, CEO and CAO of the Cummings Graduate Institute for Behavioral Health Studies, has been a vocal advocate for addressing Arizona’s maternal mortality crisis. As a member of Arizona’s Maternal Mortality Review Committee, she has highlighted critical issues hindering progress.
In a December 2024 article by the Arizona Center for Investigative Reporting, Dr. English emphasized the lack of strategic oversight and coordination in implementing the committee’s recommendations. She noted that various stakeholders often deflect responsibility, delaying actionable reforms necessary to save lives. She emphasized the issue of fragmented responsibility, stating,
“Right now, it is more a situation of everyone pointing the finger at someone else, instead of collectively taking responsibility for what can be done and implemented as quickly as possible so that we can start saving lives.”
The article also reported that, despite over $2 million in federal funding allocated in 2019 to analyze and prevent maternal deaths, nearly 90% of pregnancy-associated fatalities in Arizona remain preventable. These fatalities often result from systemic issues such as inadequate access to perinatal care and social disparities, including unstable housing and transportation.
Dr. English’s insights underscore the urgent need for collaborative efforts among insurance providers, healthcare professionals, and state agencies to implement comprehensive reforms aimed at reducing maternal mortality in Arizona.
