From orientation to graduation, CGI’s Electronic Campus equips students with tools to thrive in a global online environment.
Cummings Graduate Institute for Behavioral Health Studies (CGI) has redefined the educational experience for students worldwide by offering a fully online learning environment through its innovative Electronic Campus. Lori Christianson, Senior Director of the Electronic Campus, shares how this comprehensive digital platform provides the tools and support students need to thrive.
“What it means to be 100% online is that our campus is electronic.,” Christianson explained. “That’s from our classrooms, which are a learning management system known as Canvas. That’s our library, which is 100% online. That’s our help desk, and that is our writing center.”
One of the key components of the Electronic Campus is the CGI 411 course, which is an on-demand orientation for new students. “Everyone is enrolled in [CGI 411] as soon as they accept their admission to CGI,” Christianson said. “It’s a place where they can go for an on-demand orientation and to learn more about our services. They can even book what we call a jumpstart appointment where they can meet with myself or another member of the electronic campus for a guided tour of Canvas, our online classrooms.”
Additionally, the CGI Help Desk is a dedicated resource for navigating the Cummings Graduate Institute experience. Whether you need assistance with accessing course materials, resolving technical issues, or finding information about academic policies, our Help Desk team provides prompt and reliable support.
The library, accessible 24/7, is another standout feature of CGI’s electronic campus. “We have a vast collection of databases which contain full-text articles on a variety of topics that are all specific to behavioral health,” Christianson highlighted. “In addition, we have electronic books and we try to keep an electronic reserve copy of as many of our textbooks as we can so that students don’t have to necessarily buy the textbook. They can check it out from our library, read it for a couple of hours at a time, and take care of their homework readings that way.”
CGI’s Writing Center supports students in developing scholarly writing skills. Whether students need help brainstorming ideas, developing outlines, synthesizing research, or refining their writing, the Writing Center provides personalized guidance to enhance their academic work. Students can also receive detailed feedback on drafts of written assignments, ensuring their work meets high academic standards. All sessions are conducted virtually via Zoom with CGI’s dedicated Writing Coach, making expert support easily accessible. Appointments can be self-scheduled or faculty-referred, ensuring accessible, expert guidance for academic success.
Christianson emphasized how these resources cater to students’ diverse needs, allowing them to balance their professional and personal lives effectively.
“Other institutions sometimes, you know, roll out the content just a few weeks at a time, but ours are 100 % built out from day one,” she noted. “So if a student is busy, if they have other things going on in their lives and they know that they need to work a little bit ahead, maybe they’re taking a vacation or doing something like that, they can. Everything is instantly available to them.”
CGI’s Electronic Campus demonstrates how the institute empowers students to achieve their academic goals on their own terms, offering flexibility and robust support every step of the way.
