Cummings Graduate Institute of Behavioral Health Studies (CGI) proudly celebrates Dr. Ellen Fink-Samnick, a distinguished DBH alumna, faculty member, and DBH program advisor, for receiving the 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Social Workers of Virginia (NASW-VA).
With a 42-year career dedicated to social work and behavioral health, Dr. Fink-Samnick has significantly impacted ethics, health care quality, integrated care, interprofessional collaboration, and trauma-informed leadership. As a prolific author, she has published five books, with two more forthcoming in 2025 and 2026.
Dr. Fink-Samnick plays a vital role at CGI as a faculty member, academic advisor, and IRB coordinator, mentoring future behavioral health professionals. She also serves as adjunct faculty at George Mason University’s College of Public Health.
In her acceptance speech, Dr. Fink-Samnick reaffirmed the resilience and influence of social work, stating,
“There will always be something to challenge our professional identity and our purpose. However, social work will always step up with our brain trust of indomitable knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies. We will flex our muscles to intervene with, support, empower, and advocate for all individuals, families, groups, & communities, as well as for our workforce. For my colleagues in hospitals and healthcare organizations, know our value to existing and emerging case management models is indisputable. We will disrupt the status quo to advance needed change. Any lesser action is unacceptable under our watch.”
The NASW-VA Lifetime Achievement Award is the highest honor given to a social work professional in Virginia, recognizing an outstanding career of leadership, advocacy, and dedication to the field.
