About Dr. Eddie Lee Blakes Jr.
Dr. Eddie Lee Blakes Jr., was born and raised in Peoria, Illinois, by their mother, Linda Ziegenbein. Growing up alongside their two brothers, Chris Blakes and Courtney Blakes, they experienced the challenges of limited resources, with their single mother working tirelessly in a factory to provide for their family. Despite these hardships, Dr. Blakes remained determined to pursue higher education and make a meaningful impact in the field of mental health.
They graduated from Lakeland High School in 2012 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Law Enforcement and Justice Administration from Western Illinois University in 2015. Their passion for helping others led them to obtain a Master of Science in Addiction Counseling from Grand Canyon University in 2021. In 2025, they achieved their Doctorate in Behavioral Health from Cummings Graduate Institute for Behavioral Health Studies.
With over a decade of experience in the mental health field, Dr. Blakes has dedicated six of those years to working directly with high-risk youth diagnosed with PTSD. Their career began as an investigative case manager for the Department of Child Safety before transitioning to non-profit outpatient services. Over the last five years, they have worked with both children and adults across various levels of care, including mobile crisis response, inpatient and outpatient treatment, intensive outpatient programs (IOP), and specialized IOP substance abuse treatment (IOPSA).
Dr. Blakes is the Founder and CEO of VR Psych Services LLC, a private practice clinic dedicated to revolutionizing mental health care through Trauma-Focused Virtual Reality Therapy. Their mission is to merge cutting-edge technology with behavioral health science to provide accessible, comprehensive, and patient-centered treatment for individuals affected by trauma, PTSD, and other mental health challenges.
They are deeply committed to addressing systemic gaps in mental health services and ensuring historically underserved populations receive equitable and effective care. Beyond their professional work, Dr. Blakes is a steadfast advocate for equity, justice, and the eradication of discrimination in both their personal and professional life.
