DBH Alumni Profile: Dr. Juan Sanchez, DBH, MSW, MA

About Dr. Juan Sanchez

Dr. Juan Sanchez was born in El Paso, Texas, and raised in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico. He began his undergraduate studies at the University of New Mexico before joining the United States Marine Corps in 1994. Over the next 20 years, Dr. Sanchez served with distinction, deploying multiple times to combat zones during the Iraq War and earning numerous honors, including the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Combat “V” for Valor. He also participated in humanitarian relief efforts in Indonesia following the 2004 tsunami.

While serving stateside, Dr. Sanchez earned a Bachelor of Science in Social Psychology from Park University. Throughout his military career, he held leadership positions across ranks and had the honor of training and mentoring more than 40,000 Marines.

After retiring from active duty, he returned to New Mexico to continue his education. He re-enrolled at the University of New Mexico, earning a Master’s degree in Family Studies in 2018 with concentrations in Family Life Education, Human Development in Families, and Family Relations. He went on to complete a Master’s in Clinical Social Work from New Mexico Highlands University in 2019.

In 2021, Dr. Sanchez enrolled in the Doctor of Behavioral Health (DBH) program at Cummings Graduate Institute for Behavioral Health Studies. Through his DBH education, he continued his mission of service by addressing critical gaps in healthcare access in his home community.

Culminating Project

Medical Detoxification with Follow-On Integrated Behavioral Health Services

Rio Arriba County has faced a devastating and long-standing crisis related to substance use and addiction, exacerbated by the absence of local medical detoxification services. Dr. Sanchez’s culminating project proposes a transformative, integrated model of care that begins with medical detoxification as a first-line intervention, followed by comprehensive behavioral health support.

The project highlights the urgent need to disrupt siloed healthcare systems and build sustainable, collaborative models that address both the physical and psychological dimensions of substance use disorders. By advocating for an integrated service delivery organization in the region, the project demonstrates both the clinical and economic return on investment such a model could bring to the community.

Informed by his military leadership and deep community roots, Dr. Sanchez envisions this initiative as a catalyst for healing and dialogue—bridging gaps in care, shifting service paradigms, and restoring hope in a region long impacted by generational health disparities.

“The Doctor in Behavioral Health (DBH) program has changed my understanding of the subject and career path. Before this academic journey, my knowledge of behavioral health was primarily theoretical, including essential ideas and methods. However, the DBH curriculum combined intense academic research with practical application, helping me understand behavioral health from multiple angles. Recognizing mental health as part of total health changed my perspective. The biopsychosocial model, which showed how biological, psychological, and social variables affect mental health, was stressed in the DBH curriculum.
