Cummings Graduate Institute for Behavioral Health Studies (CGI) is proud to celebrate Serah Muiruri, a Doctor of Behavioral Health (DBH) student, as she recently published 2 new books, Breaking Chains: A Guide to Overcoming Interpersonal Violence and Reclaiming Your Strength and Mental Health Awakening: Empower Your Mind and Soul: A Blueprint for Mental Strength and Wellness. Both books will be showcased at the upcoming International Book Fair in Frankfurt, Germany, taking place this October.
Breaking Chains: A Guide to Overcoming Interpersonal Violence and Reclaiming Your Strength
In Breaking Chains, Serah offers a trauma-informed, evidence-based guide that aligns closely with core competencies emphasized in the Doctor of Behavioral Health curriculum, including population health, behavioral interventions, and trauma-informed patient-centered care. This book addresses the complex psychological, social, and systemic dynamics of interpersonal violence, providing a clear framework for recognizing abuse, seeking appropriate support, and rebuilding personal autonomy. Drawing from the principles of integrated behavioral health, Muiruri incorporates case narratives, reflective exercises, and community resources that support long-term recovery and resilience. The text is a valuable contribution to behavioral health literature, empowering both practitioners and individuals to break cycles of violence through awareness, advocacy, and clinical best practices.
Mental Health Awakening: Empower Your Mind and Soul: A Blueprint for Mental Strength and Wellness
Blending personal reflection with actionable strategies, Mental Health Awakening offers practical tools that are both culturally responsive and clinically relevant, reflecting the Doctor of Behavioral Health program’s emphasis on whole-person care, emotional intelligence, and patient empowerment. This book helps readers navigate the challenges of everyday stress, emotional burnout, and the complexities of modern life. With a strong focus on emotional intelligence, Serah explores how greater self-awareness can enhance relationships, strengthen decision-making, and support long-term wellness. Through relatable stories, step-by-step exercises, and mindful guidance, readers are empowered to make small, meaningful changes that lead to lasting transformation. Whether you’re seeking balance, healing, or personal growth, Serah’s book is a supportive companion on the journey toward mental clarity and fulfillment.
“Mental Health Awakening is not a theoretical discussion, it is a lived journey woven from years of professional experience in trauma-informed care. I wrote this book because I saw a gap in access to mental health resources. Too often, mental health is treated as a checkbox or a crisis , not a continuum. People are offered coping mechanisms without compassion, strategies without souls. This book is my attempt to bridge this gap,to bring science and spirituality into harmony, and empower readers to reclaim their stories.” – Serah Muiruri

DBH in Practice: Advancing Trauma-Informed and Preventive Care
As a student in CGI’s Doctor of Behavioral Health (DBH) program, Serah brings to her writing a robust understanding of integrated care, trauma-informed practices, and the behavioral drivers of health outcomes. The DBH curriculum’s emphasis on evidence-based interventions, population health, trauma informed care, and healthcare innovation is reflected throughout both books. Through her work, Serah demonstrates how DBH-trained professionals are uniquely equipped to lead change, not only in clinical and organizational settings but also through education, advocacy, and thought leadership.
“Breaking free from the Chains of interpersonal violence is not just about survival, it is about reclaiming your power, your voice and your life. The physical, emotional and psychological impact of abuse is profound and long lasting. Abuse can leave survivors with deep scars that affect mental health, self -esteem, and relationships. Through self-compassion, therapy, mindfulness, and support from others, survivors can reclaim their sense of worth, overcome self blame and nurture healthy relationships. Healing is not an easy or linear process, but with the right tools and support, survivors can rise above their past experiences and thrive” – Serah Muiruri
Together, these two books serve as powerful extensions of the DBH mission: to improve access to quality care and support whole-person wellness across communities. Whether addressing the lasting impact of interpersonal violence or guiding readers through everyday stressors, Serah’s work exemplifies the transformative potential of behavioral health leadership. Cummings Graduate Institute congratulates Serah on these compelling contributions to the field and celebrates her commitment to advancing integrated behavioral healthcare through knowledge, empathy, and empowerment.
