CGI Alumnus Dr. Napoleon Harrington Receives 2026 DEAC Famous Alumni Award

Dr. Napoleon Harrington, DBH, LPC, MA, has been recognized with the 2026 Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC) Famous Alumni Award, honoring his leadership, advocacy, and impact in the field of behavioral health. A graduate of Cummings Graduate Institute for Behavioral Health Studies’ Doctor of Behavioral Health (DBH) program, Dr. Harrington has built a distinguished career centered on expanding access to mental health care, advancing the counseling profession, and promoting integrated behavioral health solutions.

As Founder and Therapist of Ambassador Counseling & Resource Group, Dr. Harrington has become widely recognized for his work as a counselor, speaker, educator, and advocate. His leadership has earned national recognition, including being named the American Mental Health Counselors Association’s 2020 Counselor of the Year and serving on the Michigan Board of Counseling following an appointment by Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Throughout his career, he has remained deeply committed to strengthening behavioral healthcare systems and advocating for equitable, high-quality care.

Dr. Harrington also played a key leadership role in protecting the counseling profession in Michigan during efforts to restrict licensed professional counselors’ scope of practice. Under his leadership with the Michigan Mental Health Counselors Association, advocacy efforts helped secure passage of legislation preserving counselors’ ability to diagnose and treat mental health conditions, an achievement that had lasting impact on the profession statewide.

While enrolled in CGI’s DBH program, Dr. Harrington completed specialty certificates in Integrated Behavioral Health Leadership and Gerontology. His culminating project, Care & Connect: An Evidence-Based Care Program for In Vitro Fertilization, focused on supporting the emotional and psychological needs of individuals navigating IVF treatment through integrated behavioral health interventions.

Dr. Harrington follows fellow CGI DBH alumni Dr. Brandy K. Biglow, DBH, LMHC, QS, CCTP, and Dr. Heather Jelonek, DBH, LAC, who also received Outstanding Graduate Awards from DEAC, continuing CGI alumni’s growing recognition for leadership and impact in the healthcare field.

Dr. Harrington’s recognition with the 2026 DEAC Famous Alumni Award reflects both his professional accomplishments and his continued commitment to advancing the future of behavioral health. CGI proudly celebrates Dr. Harrington’s impact as a clinician, advocate, leader, and alumnus whose work continues to improve lives and strengthen communities.

“As a member of the AAPI community, I’m very familiar with the barriers to mental health services and the need to break through the glass wall of cultural stigma that prevents many from receiving potentially life–saving treatment. “The Doctor in Behavioral Health (DBH) program has changed my understanding of the subject and career path. Before this academic journey, my knowledge of behavioral health was primarily theoretical, including essential ideas and methods. However, the DBH curriculum combined intense academic research with practical application, helping me understand behavioral health from multiple angles. Recognizing mental health as part of total health changed my perspective. The biopsychosocial model, which showed how biological, psychological, and social variables affect mental health, was stressed in the DBH curriculum. This comprehensive approach made me realize how complex human behavior is and how important it is to address mental health issues. Effective interventions must target the individual’s surroundings, relationships, and life experiences, not just symptoms. The curriculum also gave me enhanced evidence-based practice training to execute successful solutions.
