New partnership reflects CGI’s commitment to advancing integrated, whole-person approaches to maternal mental health care.
Cummings Graduate Institute for Behavioral Health Studies (CGI) is proud to join the National Maternal Mental Health Accelerator as an inaugural member, strengthening CGI’s commitment to advancing integrated behavioral healthcare and improving health outcomes for women and families.
Led by the Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health, the National Maternal Mental Health Accelerator brings together organizations and leaders committed to accelerating action, implementation, and measurable progress of improvements in maternal mental health care nationwide. The Accelerator is launching with support from founding sponsor Kenvue.
As an inaugural member, CGI joins a national effort focused on addressing critical gaps in maternal mental health through five shared priorities:
- Training providers and eliminating care deserts by strengthening early identification, diagnosis, treatment pathways, and access to mental health and maternity care.
- Elevating patient stories to reduce stigma, identify gaps in care, inform policy, and provide hope to women and families.
- Expanding postpartum care beyond the traditional six-week period to support greater continuity of care after childbirth.
- Advancing paid leave to provide women time to recover and care for their babies and enable families and caregivers to provide support when maternal mental health conditions arise.
- Advancing state and federal policy to support systemic improvements in maternal mental health.
Participation in the National Maternal Mental Health Accelerator closely aligns with CGI’s mission to transform healthcare through integrated behavioral health education and its emphasis on preparing healthcare professionals to address the interconnected physical, behavioral, and social factors that influence health.
Maternal and perinatal health are also areas of growing scholarship within the CGI community. Doctor of Behavioral Health (DBH) students, alumni, and faculty have explored topics including perinatal mental health, women’s health, culturally responsive care, trauma-informed care, health disparities, and the integration of physical and behavioral healthcare.
“Maternal mental health disorders must be assessed and treated in the care environments in which they most commonly appear first to providers. Providers in maternity care, gynecological care, primary care, and behavioral health must receive specialized training in assessing and addressing these conditions, and be prepared to work together in interdisciplinary teams. Integrated care for mother, baby, and family is the gold standard for preventing devastating and lifelong consequences of untreated MMH conditions. We are very proud to continue to support the Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health by signing on as an inaugural member of the Accelerator.” – Dr. Cara English, DBH, MA, PMH-C
Through its participation in the National Maternal Mental Health Accelerator, CGI looks forward to contributing its expertise in integrated behavioral healthcare and collaborating with national partners to help build more responsive, accessible, and whole-person systems of care for women and families.
